immigrant children who have recently arrived in the united states, sometimes called newcomer youth, are enrolling in school in increasing numbers. these students bring a variety of assets and come from diverse backgrounds—they include refugees, asylees or asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors, and undocumented youth. some may be classified as english language learners.

not all newcomer youth arrive with trauma exposure, but school systems can support those who do by identifying student and family strengths and community connections. this brief provides strategies and resources to support educators in learning and implementing trauma-informed practices for newcomer immigrant youth.
